3rd January ..... Did you know that

.. today is National Drinking Straw day.

I know a little bit of trivia but actually they are something that have proved to be really useful, especially when you have had a filling and hence have a numb face.  Been there done that LOL

Unbelievably the first known drinking straws were used by the Sumerians in about 3000 B.C.E. and were often gold pipes inlaid with a precious blue stone.  They were used for drinking beer and left the dregs at the bottom of the vessel.

In the 1800's rye grass was used and the modern version was created in 1888 by Marvin Stone.
These were paper straws.

Nowadays they are usually a form of plastic but Kellogs have developed a cereal version, fun for kids for breakfast time.

There is also not just a normal drinking straw.  They come in a variety of styles.  There are extending straws, silicon straws, bendable straws, miniature straws, crazy straws, metal straws, spoon straws and wide straws to name a few.

So next time you go out to buy drinking straws have a look at what is available.
